I can't skate. Which program is best for me?
Any of the beginner/intermediate programs would work for you. You'll find that fellow players are very supportive of newcomers. We want you to keep coming back!
If you really can't skate, one of the morning sessions might work best for you. There is a coach and lots of support.
I'm not sure if I want to play. Can I go watch first?
You can observe any time... we don't even charge admission!
I don't have any equipment. Can I still play?
Yes and no... you need full equipment (helmet, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, pants, shin pads, and skates) to be on the ice. When players are new they usually borrow equipment until they're hooked (like their second time playing!) Sometimes used equipment is available from our league. There is always an ample supply of new and used equipment at Play It Again Sports in Portland.
Cost?
Typically the sessions at PIA are 5-6 weeks long and cost around $70, averaging about $12 per game. Subs pay $13 per game. Goalies play for a reduced rate. There is a goalie schedule for games; please find a replacement if you need to cancel.
Pick up hockey at FIC and NYA is $10 per session. Goalies play for free, but let the contact person know if you are coming. See contact page.
How do I get on a travelling team?
Players can join travelling teams depending on available space. We do not have try outs. Express your interest to the team leader and if there isn't an immediate spot for you, you may be able to play as a sub.
